YJ Jeep Wrangler (1987 - 1995)
The YJ was the first Jeep to carry the Wrangler nameplate. It’s immediately identifiable by its distinctive square headlights and the only Wrangler generation to use them. The YJ was produced as a 2-door only, and it shares some body architecture with the earlier CJ-7.
If you’re sourcing parts for a YJ, know that doors, tops, and body panels are generation-specific and will not cross over to a TJ, JK, or JL.
- Years: 1987 – 1995
- 2-door only and no 4-door variant
- Wheelbase: 93.4 inches
- Engines: 2.5L 4-cylinder or 4.2L inline-6
- Front axle: Dana 30 | Rear: Dana 35 (base) or Dana 44 (Renegade)
- Doors, hardtops, and soft tops are YJ-specific and do not fit any other generation
- Some door hinge hardware crosses with CJ-7 (1981 – 1986)
TJ Jeep Wrangler (1997 - 2006)
The TJ brought back round headlights and introduced coil spring suspension in place of the YJ’s leaf springs and a major improvement for off-road performance. Note there was no 1996 model year; Jeep skipped a year between the YJ and TJ.
Despite having the same wheelbase as the YJ (93.4 inches), TJ body panels, doors, and tops are completely different and will not interchange.

- 2-door only (LJ Unlimited = extended wheelbase, 2004 – 2006)
- Wheelbase: 93.4 inches
- Engines: 2.5L 4-cylinder or 4.0L inline-6
- Front axle: Dana 30 | Rear: Dana 35 (base) or Dana 44 (Rubicon)
- Doors, hardtops, and soft tops are TJ-specific
- Some late-production drivetrain parts may cross with early YJ but always verify part numbers
JK & JKU Jeep Wrangler (2007 - 2018)
The JK is the most popular Wrangler generation and has the widest availability of used OEM parts. It’s significantly larger than the TJ but virtually no body parts cross between them. The JK introduced the 4-door Unlimited (JKU) as a full production model for the first time.
Important: JK vs JKU Fitment Difference
JK = 2-door, wheelbase 95.4″ JKU = 4-door Unlimited, wheelbase 116.0″
Front doors are shared between JK and JKU. Rear doors, rear quarter panels, and hardtops are not interchangeable and rear doors only exist on the 4-door JKU. Always confirm body style when ordering.

- Engine: 3.8L V6 (2007 – 2011) or 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2012 -2018) engine accessories do not interchange between the two
- Front axle: Dana 30 (base) or Dana 44 (Rubicon)
- Rear axle: Dana 35 (base) or Dana 44 (Rubicon/late Sahara)
- Fender flares, hood, grille, and windshield which are JK-specific do not fit TJ or JL
JL & JLU Jeep Wrangler (2018 -Present)
The JL is the current Wrangler platform and introduced significant engineering changes over the JK. Despite a similar appearance, very few parts cross between a JK and JL. The JL uses new aluminum door construction, a revised windshield, and different axles throughout.
- Years: 2018 -“Present
- 2-door (JL) or 4-door Unlimited (JLU)
- Engines: 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder or 3.6L V6
- Front axle: Dana M186 | Rear: Dana M220 are different from all previous generations
- Doors: new aluminum construction are not compatible with JK doors
- Hardtop, soft top, fenders, and bumpers are JL-specific
- Windshield frame is narrower than JK and accessories do not cross over

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Jeep Wrangler doors interchange between years?
Within the same generation, yes with one exception. JK front doors fit all 2007 – 2018 Wranglers (both JK and JKU). JKU rear doors only fit the 4-door Unlimited. Doors do not cross between generations YJ, TJ, JK, and JL doors are each unique.
Can I put a JK hardtop on a TJ?
No. The JK and TJ have different body widths, windshield angles, and mounting points. A JK hardtop will not fit a TJ. Always match your hardtop to your exact generation.
Will JK parts fit a JL Wrangler?
Very few. Doors, hardtops, soft tops, bumpers, fender flares, and most body panels are JL-specific and will not fit a JK. Always verify before purchasing.
What's the difference between a JK and a JKU?
JK = 2-door (2007 – 2018). JKU = 4-door Unlimited (2007 – 2018). They share the same front half, but rear doors, rear quarter panels, rear hardtop sections, and wheelbase are different. Front doors are shared.
Are used OEM parts as good as new?
For doors, hardtops, axles, and body panels — used OEM parts pulled from a well-maintained donor vehicle are often superior to new aftermarket parts. They’re built to Jeep’s original specs and have a proven track record. Ask about rust, damage, and donor vehicle mileage when ordering.
